Nearly $40 million was stolen in a hack, and the platform says it will fully reimburse users.

That was the promise Mercado Bitcoin, a Brazilian crypto exchange, made yesterday.

It sounds pretty responsible. As an ordinary user, when I see news like this, I feel relieved—but then I still wonder: if the platform refuses to pay up this time, what can I do?

There’s still a lot of uncertainty behind the promise to “make users whole.” Promises can be made in an instant, but getting the money back into your account takes time—and rebuilding trust takes even longer.

The next time I see “full reimbursement,” I’ll let myself feel happy for a moment, then check whether I’ve become less careful about how I store my assets.
