Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that 4.5 million $USDT have been frozen.

The amount itself is not large enough to affect USDT’s overall redemption or circulation, but the signal is worth noting: although transfers on public blockchains may seem permissionless, stablecoin issuers can still precisely freeze specific addresses in response to compliance requirements, security investigations, or law enforcement cooperation.

This is also a reminder for ordinary users:

1. Self-custody does not mean complete protection from risk; funds linked to theft or fraud may be frozen.
2. Stablecoins are not purely “interference-proof cash on the blockchain”—issuers have the ability to blacklist addresses.
3. Before receiving large sums, it is best to check the sender’s address and the source of the funds to avoid being unwittingly implicated.

In the short term, this looks more like a security and compliance measure. In the long term, tension will persist between the controllability of compliant stablecoins and the crypto world’s pursuit of decentralization.
