U.S. midterm election vote-counting night: The House flipping blue is all but locked in.

Fox and Bloomberg projections agree: Democrats are on track to win 223+ seats (218 is the threshold for a majority), while Republicans are projected to win about 195. A few seats in California and New York are still being counted, but the overall picture is clear. The Republicans’ narrow 218–214 majority is over.

The Senate is the real suspense tonight. As of 8 p.m. Eastern, no TV network has dared to call control of the Senate. Republicans entered the night ahead 53–47; Democrats need a net gain of 4 seats to take the majority. A 50–50 tie would mean Republicans keep control—Vance would cast the tiebreaking vote. Kalshi and Polymarket put Democrats’ odds at 69–73%, but “shy Trump supporters” have repeatedly caused polls to underestimate Republicans, so don’t pop the champagne too early.

From a crypto perspective, here are three hard truths:

1. The odds had already priced in the “blue flip.” Before polls closed, Polymarket put Democrats at 95% to win the House and 73% to win the Senate. The market had already positioned itself for the most likely outcome. On election night, BTC edged up just 0.2%, hovering around $77,800—barely moving. Once the result is official, it’ll likely be a “sell the news” event, or a case of the bad news already being priced in.

2. The CLARITY Act is the real loss for crypto. The market-structure bill has been stalled ever since a procedural vote in the Senate failed 49–50 on September 15. TD Cowen analysts put it bluntly: a Democratic sweep means the bill is basically dead for the next two years. SEC and CFTC jurisdiction will remain murky, and the ceiling on crypto compliance won’t lift. Tonight’s price moves are noise; the legislative vacuum over the next two years is the signal.

3. Don’t console yourself with “historical patterns.” BTC rose in all three historical instances in the 12 months after a midterm election (+24.5%/+44.9%/+92.3%), but it fell in Q4 of all three midterm election years (2014: -17.3%; 2018: -43.5%; 2022: -14.8%). We’re in Q4 now: the Fear & Greed Index is at 26, BTC has fallen for 4 straight weeks, and it’s down 11% from its October high of $87,000. History says “a year from now”—but you have to make it through the year first.

Keep an eye on two numbers tonight: BTC at $76,000 (the support line QCP has drawn; a break below it would intensify panic); and the final size of the House majority, determined by the remaining seats in California and New York. The larger the majority, the brighter the “spotlight” from Democratic investigative subpoenas, the more tariff and spending hearings there will be, and the harder it will be on risk assets.
