Binance has completed a preliminary review of the October 29 security incident: approximately $6.34 billion in assets were affected, and about $2.85 billion has been frozen or blocked. The platform has pledged to cover all losses in full; 98% of the affected token assets have been replenished, while the remaining illiquid assets are still being repurchased.
What should concern the industry even more is the full attack chain: a tampered Homebrew installer in June planted a supply-chain vulnerability; a fake job interview in September delivered 0-day malware; and in October, the attackers used an internal AI tool on a compromised computer to move laterally, ultimately breaching the wallet signing service and exploiting the EIP-7702 authorization mechanism to bypass the withdrawal suspension. The FBI has attributed the incident to North Korea.
This was not a simple private-key leak, but a multistage breach involving a “supply-chain attack + social engineering + AI tool permissions + signing architecture.” Hot-wallet isolation, least privilege, access boundaries for internal AI, and monitoring of anomalous delegations all need to be reexamined. Compensation is only the first step; trust must be rebuilt through transparent follow-up tracking, third-party reviews, and ongoing, verifiable security operations.
