According to CNBC, campaigns and political groups spent more than $187 million on nearly 300 AI-generated or AI-enhanced political ads during the midterm election cycle, according to an analysis released by the Wesleyan Media Project last week. More than 90% of the spending came from Republican candidates, a Republican party committee or a Republican-leaning group, and most of the ads lacked disclosures, the analysis found. Meta, Google’s YouTube and X face challenges monitoring AI-generated ads and posts. About 30 state laws set varying requirements for AI use and disclosure in political ads, but no comprehensive federal law governs the practice. Proposed federal bills addressing deceptive AI-generated political content have not advanced out of committee.
