Hong Kong has just put 24/7 tokenised settlement into operation — and this is infrastructure, not just talk.

The facts: On Monday, 2 Nov 2026, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced that EnsembleTX — the pilot phase of Project Ensemble — had entered a new stage: interbank settlement for tokenised deposit transactions is now running 24/7 using tokenised central bank money. The participants include 12 banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Bank of China Hong Kong, and others), plus 20 industry pioneers, including Ant International and BlackRock. Recognised dealers have also completed trials of secondary trading in tokenised Exchange Fund Bills, and those trials will be expanded to licensed stablecoins. Separately, HSBC's HKD stablecoin, RedCoin, reached 50,000 users around 10 days after its launch on 23 Oct.

Status: CONFIRMED — official HKMA announcement.

My take: what makes this important isn't the “24/7” part, but the money being used for settlement: central bank money itself, not private stablecoins. That removes one of the biggest points of friction between traditional finance and tokenised assets — settlement no longer has to wait for business hours. But let's keep things in perspective: this is an inter-institutional pilot, not retail access, and the stablecoin trial hasn't started yet. Don't read this as “Hong Kong is all-in on crypto.”

What I'll be watching next: the start date for the stablecoin trial involving tokenised Exchange Fund Bills, and which central bank will follow with a similar model.

Which central bank do you think will follow Hong Kong with 24/7 tokenised settlement?
