FIL Issuance Fell 75%. So Why Is Price Down?
FIL is trading near $0.86, about 25% below its October 15 level of $1.16. Market cap is about $730M, and the coin is still more than 99% below its all-time high. A big supply cut and a major upgrade both landed in October, but the price went the other way.
LATEST NEWS AND EVENTS
- On October 15, the six-year vesting schedule for Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation ended. Yearly new FIL dropped from about 89M to about 21M, a cut of roughly 75%.
- On October 19, the Solstice upgrade (network version 29) went live. It retires the Filecoin Plus program and sends a growing share of block rewards to services that bring in paying customers.
- Before the upgrade, FIL rallied about 14% to $1.24 on doubled volume. After it, FIL fell about 12% in ten daily closes. It looks like a classic "sell the news" move.
- On October 26, Filecoin pitched its storage network as an alternative to high-capacity hard drives that are reportedly sold out through 2028.
- Macro: the Binance hack on October 29 pushed Bitcoin down to about $78K, the Fed held rates with a hawkish tone last week, and US midterm elections are today.
TOKENOMICS
- Max supply: 2B FIL.
- Circulating: about 839M (roughly 42%).
- Vesting for the two founding groups is finished. New FIL now comes only from block rewards, about 21M per year, which is roughly 2% of circulating supply.
- Burns: network base fees are burned permanently. Storage providers also lock FIL as collateral, which removes it from liquid supply.
- Projections suggest net supply growth could fall sharply by the end of 2027, and could even turn negative. This depends on how much the network is used.
- Important: the 75% cut is in new yearly issuance. Circulating supply does not fall; it just grows more slowly.
DEEP ANALYSIS
1. The vesting end was public for six years. The market bought before the date and sold after it, so the supply cut was already priced in.
2. With issuance near 2%, price now depends on demand. Burns and collateral locking both rise with real usage. If paid usage stays low, net supply stays slightly positive.
3. Solstice ties rewards to paying customers. That is healthy for the long term, but a major incentive change can take months to show results.
4. The AI storage story is a pitch, not proof. The key numbers to watch are paid storage volume and burn rate.
5. The chart is still weak. Price sits near its 200-day average, and the shorter averages are above it. Bears are still in control.
KEY LEVELS
Support: $0.85 to $0.86, then $0.83, then $0.77 to $0.80. Deep support: $0.70 to $0.74.
Resistance: $0.88 to $0.91 (key zone), then $0.93 to $0.98, then $1.03 to $1.06, then $1.16.
FUTURE SCENARIOS (not predictions)
Bull: A daily close above $0.90 clears the 200-day average and flips the short-term trend. The next targets are $0.93 to $0.98 and $1.03 to $1.06. This needs rising paid usage and a calm market.
Base: Price ranges between $0.80 and $0.90 while the market waits for Solstice usage data and the post-election mood.
Bear: A daily close below $0.83 opens $0.77 to $0.80, and then the $0.70 to $0.74 area where FIL traded in August and September.
RISK
The supply cut is already priced in, the trend is down, and the market is shaken by the biggest hack ever. Avoid high leverage, use a stop-loss, and keep position size small.
