Standard Chartered CEO Winters on AI’s impact on jobs: Fear is real, and training is the remedy

Standard Chartered CEO Winters addressed AI’s impact on jobs at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Global Financial Leaders’ Investment Summit, saying that employees are indeed feeling anxious. He said the bank has around 100,000 employees, the same as 11 years ago. Over the years, automation has eliminated around 25,000 roles, while new positions have also been created. In May, Standard Chartered announced plans to cut back-office roles by more than 15% by 2030—around 8,000 support positions. Winters stressed that reskilling and training can help ease concerns.
