🚨Iran Is Treating Crypto as a Sanctions Weapon And the US Is Pushing Back!

Iran is using cryptocurrency to dodge sanctions, and Washington is hitting back hard.

Iran's move With oil exports crippled, Tehran is turning to Bitcoin and Tether (USDT) to move money, pay for imports, and even collect transit fees in the Strait of Hormuz. Chainalysis estimates Iran holds roughly $7.8 billion in crypto, with the IRGC behind about half of it.

The US response: Treasury's Operation Economic Outcast now targets Iran's entire crypto sector warning any exchange or payment processor that touches Iranian digital assets risks being cut off from the U.S. financial system.

OFAC has sanctioned Iranian exchange BitBank and IRGC-linked wallets.

The freeze campaign: Since Bitcoin can't be frozen, the US is leaning on Tether. In 2026 alone, ~$550 million in Iran-linked USDT was frozen in coordination with OFAC. Treasury Secretary Bessent: "We know where it is."

Bitcoin remains beyond OFAC's reach and Iran is pivoting toward Bitcoin mining and Bitcoin-denominated trade to adapt.

The blockade has holes, and ordinary Iranians are paying the price as exchanges freeze their accounts.

Washington is tightening the noose, but as long as Bitcoin exists, Iran has an escape hatch.
