Switching to another hardware wallet and importing the original recovery phrase does not resolve the risk that the old backup may have been exposed.

Trezor made this point clear in its October 30 announcement: starting in March 2026, users who purchased devices through CryptoBilis and are already using them should transfer their assets to a wallet created with a new recovery phrase. If your device has not been initialized, do not set it up yet or enter an existing backup.

A Safe 5 was reported to possibly contain a hardware implant. At the time the announcement was published, Trezor had not received the device for physical inspection or any reports of asset losses from affected users, so the suspicion should not be treated as confirmed.

Restoring an old backup only changes the device you use; creating a new backup and transferring your assets is what moves you away from the original set of keys. Be mindful of the scope: the official warning applies to devices purchased through CryptoBilis and should not be generalized to all Trezor devices.

When transferring assets, verify the full receiving address. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone claiming to be customer support. Self-custody still carries operational and safekeeping risks.
