Security: After Latin American exchange Mercado Bitcoin was breached, hackers transferred about $8 million in ETH, while the address still holds roughly $46 million in assets. Tether also froze more than $4.5 million in USDT linked to the attack. What matters more is whether the remaining assets will continue to be laundered across chains, whether the custody platform’s separation of hot and cold wallets holds up under review, and how much issuers’ power to freeze stablecoins can actually help victims recover their losses. Don’t treat a single freeze as proof that losses have been settled, and don’t overlook how a run triggered by a breach at a centralized exchange can do more damage to liquidity than the hacker’s address itself.
