What’s most worth thinking about when it comes to CZ and He Yi isn’t how much money they have, but their response to the theft: “The funds were stolen? No problem, we’ll reimburse you.”

That sounds less like a custodian’s promise and more like a casino owner’s confidence.
A custodian’s responsibility is to keep assets safe. A casino’s logic is: even if we pay out, we’ve only made a little less. In 2019, Binance lost about 7,000 BTC to a hack. Its SAFU fund covered the loss in full, drawing widespread praise from the community. But few people asked: Why was it hacked? And how could Binance afford to cover the loss?

Being able to afford compensation doesn’t mean there’s no risk. If anything, it suggests the platform earns enough from its users to cover at least some losses.

The real issue to be wary of with exchanges is asset ownership. Once you deposit your coins, the number shown in your account doesn’t mean you still have control over those assets on-chain. If the platform goes bankrupt, freezes withdrawals, or faces a bank run, you may be just another creditor waiting to be repaid.

FTX is the clearest lesson: after the platform went bankrupt, users couldn’t simply get their crypto assets back. Instead, they entered a complex bankruptcy claims process and might ultimately receive compensation based on a specific valuation.

An exchange’s business model isn’t just about matching trades. Trading fees, leveraged trading, and liquidation mechanisms can all generate revenue for the platform. Users take on the risk while the platform earns the returns—an incentive structure that deserves scrutiny in itself.

Some say Binance has enough capital to withstand a bank run. But deep pockets only mean it has a greater ability to withstand risk; they don’t make it an absolutely reliable custodian of assets. These are two entirely different things.

What exchanges may truly be reluctant to face isn’t just a hack, but users continually withdrawing their coins. A hack causes a one-off loss, while user withdrawals can mean an outflow of funds, liquidity pressure, and lower trading revenue in the future.

So don’t mistake a platform’s ability to reimburse you for asset security, and don’t treat your account balance as absolute proof of ownership.

You can choose to trust an exchange, but you must understand the risks involved.
Not your keys, not your coins.
