Apple’s earnings are the “thermometer” for risk assets; BTC is waiting for an answer at $76,000

Apple delivered its best fiscal year ever—$478.8 billion in annual revenue and $132.2 billion in net income. Q4 iPhone revenue was $57.58 billion, up 17.5% year over year, with both figures beating expectations. Yet the stock fell more than 4% at one point after hours, before paring its losses to around 2%. The fact that better-than-expected earnings failed to lift the stock matters more than the earnings figures themselves.

The reason isn’t Apple, but its “margin for error.” Apple’s forward P/E is around 35, nearly double that of the S&P 500. The market doesn’t expect it merely to “meet expectations”—it expects “perfection.” Greater China revenue was $17.54 billion, nearly 6.5% below expectations; services growth fell below 10%, a three-year low; and the gross margin forecast for the holiday quarter was lowered to 45%–46%, with memory costs described as “unprecedented.” None of these issues is fatal on its own, but against a backdrop of high valuations, each one tests the bulls’ patience.

What this means for crypto is that Apple is currently the most honest barometer of sentiment toward risk assets. BTC is stuck around $76,000, with no clear direction. Over the past 24 hours, liquidations across the market totaled $389 million, with BTC long liquidations accounting for 68.5%. The Nasdaq 100 has pulled back 10% from its peak, entering a technical correction, and the negative feedback loop from tech-stock deleveraging is spreading to high-beta assets. Apple’s earnings didn’t collapse, but they also didn’t signal that “risk appetite can expand again.” With the correlation between BTC and tech stocks now stretched to the extreme, Apple’s volatile after-hours candlestick is the macro footnote crypto traders will find hardest to ignore in the short term.

Trading perspective: Apple saw no panic selling after earnings, suggesting that a fundamental floor remains in place. But there was also no “relief rally” reversal, indicating that the valuation reset is not yet complete. For BTC, that points to continued choppy trading in the $76,000–$78,000 range. The market may not choose a clear direction until this round of tech-stock deleveraging is over, rather than in response to any single crypto narrative.
