OpenAI announced that the ChatGPT Classic desktop app will stop working on January 30, 2027. Users can continue their existing conversations in the new ChatGPT app.

OpenAI made the announcement on November 2. When users open ChatGPT Classic, they will see a notice about the end of support; an in-app banner links to a page for downloading the new version. All chat history will be transferred with the account.

ChatGPT Classic is the new name for the previous desktop version of ChatGPT, following OpenAI's launch of a new app integrating ChatGPT and Codex in July. The new app has three sections: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.

OpenAI also plans to test combining Chat and Work with a small group of users over the next few weeks, while merging ChatGPT and Codex usage limits into a single shared limit.
