Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, called the FBI investigation into the $6.3 billion hacking attack on Binance a “political provocation.” Yonhap News reported her remarks on Tuesday (3).
She also said that Pyongyang is “closely monitoring” the situation. Hours earlier, the state-run KCNA had called the theft allegations “fabrications,” according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, U.S. agencies continue to urge exchanges to block wallets linked to the stolen funds.
The details of the FBI investigation
The attackers drained Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange, on October 29. Security researchers describe it as the largest crypto heist on record.
On October 31, the FBI blamed the TraderTraitor group, which was linked to the $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025.
The FBI said the attackers converted most of the stolen assets into Ethereum (ETH). The agency released wallet addresses associated with the crime and recommended that crypto companies reject transactions from those accounts.
Blockchain analytics firms such as TRM Labs and Chainalysis also linked the attack to North Korea. A detailed investigation into the Binance hack shows how the funds were withdrawn from the exchange.
What does Donald Trump say?
So far, the exchange itself has been left to bear the cost. Binance resumed crypto withdrawals after saying it had covered about 95% of customers’ losses with its reserves.
In Washington, statements were cautious. At an event at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday (31), President Donald Trump played down the incident.
“I’m not concerned. We’re looking into it,” he said.
He added that the U.S. still does not know whether North Korea was behind the attack. As of the time of this report, there was no record of a response from the U.S. government to Kim’s remarks.
The next challenge is determining whether exchanges can freeze the funds before they are withdrawn. The timeline of the recent Bitget hack showed how quickly North Korean suspects move the funds.
