【Weekend “whale buys the dip in ETH”? Turns out a thief was laundering money! $106 million stolen】
On November 1, more than $106 million in USDT and USDC was stolen from the accounts of an unnamed European institution at multiple exchanges. Using the address 0x9eca, the thief bought 27,553 ETH on-chain at an average price of about $2,286 (around $62.97 million), leading many people to mistake it for a whale buying the dip. Stablecoins can be frozen, but ETH can’t. Some of the funds were later bridged and converted into Monero, whose destination is almost impossible to trace. A large on-chain purchase doesn’t necessarily mean the buyer is bullish.
