Stacks Bond 3 is touting “3% annual yield on staked BTC.” After reading the rules, I have just one impression: you think you’re earning interest on BTC, but really you’re being recruited to hold the bag for STX.

The rules are right there: lock up BTC, and you also have to lock up STX worth about 5% of your BTC. The target annual yield is 3%, with rewards paid weekly. This round has a capacity of 1,005 BTC—more than the roughly 735 BTC combined in the previous two rounds.

The more BTC comes in, the more people will have to buy STX on the market to pair with it. Put simply, this creates built-in demand for STX; “BTCFi infrastructure” is just the wrapping.

And don’t assume that 3% is a no-brainer. The yield comes from miner bidding, not from newly minted tokens—that much the fans got right. But “target” doesn’t mean guaranteed. If your 5% STX position drops by 20%, a year’s worth of interest is already wiped out by a third.

There’s another pretty funny detail: a bunch of accounts are pushing “no wrapping, no custody, no bridging,” while Xverse itself says rewards are paid in sBTC. A pegged asset is still an asset, and getting back to native BTC takes an extra step.

Lines like “whitelist gets in early” and “Xverse’s allocation filled up in just 12 hours” reek of FOMO. Wallets competing for a share is their business; it has nothing to do with whether you make money.

Go ahead and try it if you want, but first figure out whether you’re earning BTC or helping lock up STX supply.
