Binance’s $6.3 billion hole still hasn’t been patched, and now Hyperliquid is in the crosshairs too.
Bloomberg reports that someone pulled off $170 million worth of suspicious trades on the platform, targeting oil prices—trying to manipulate prices on commodity perpetuals. The irony? ICE just signed an exclusive deal last week to bring Hyperliquid’s model into the regulated U.S. market. $HYPE briefly surged 17% that night, with Druckenmiller backing it and Musk watching from the sidelines. Regulatory approval is nowhere in sight, but the manipulators have already shown up to scope things out.
GoPlus’s October report is even more alarming: 45 major security incidents, with losses of $6.47 billion—8.2 times September’s figure. The Binance incident alone accounted for most of that. Eleven oil tankers caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz over nine days; oil prices are getting hit in the physical world, while someone is trying to manipulate them online. This market is becoming more valuable—and a bigger target for thieves.
My take: In an era when oil, stocks, and forex are all moving on-chain, the attack surface goes way beyond “protect your private keys.” Oracles, liquidation engines, and price benchmarks are all new targets. It doesn’t matter that $BTC has climbed back to 79,000; trust always takes longer to recover than prices. These days, old money and bad actors are moving in at the same speed.
If you trade perps, take a closer look at how the oracle works. Don’t just watch the candles.
