On October 30 local time, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) announced after its plenary meeting in Paris that it would launch a targeted review of the virtual asset sector. The review will focus on countries and regions with significant levels of crypto activity and encourage jurisdictions to implement anti-money laundering standards more quickly.
This action does not target any particular exchange, nor does it announce a blanket ban on cryptocurrencies. Instead, it will assess whether jurisdictions are effectively enforcing their regulatory frameworks.
📌 Three details about the review are worth noting:
1️⃣ Jurisdictions with significant crypto activity will be a priority
FATF will focus primarily on countries and regions where virtual asset service provider (VASP) activity is substantial, while also taking into account their previous assessment results.
2️⃣ The focus is not just on legislation, but on enforcement
A FATF report published in July this year found that 83% of the jurisdictions surveyed had passed or implemented legislation related to the Travel Rule for crypto transfers.
But having rules in place does not mean they are being enforced: of the 91 jurisdictions with a legal framework for the Travel Rule, 55 had yet to take corresponding supervisory or enforcement action.
3️⃣ Findings will be released in stages starting in 2027
The results of this targeted review will be published in phases: the first batch is expected in June 2027, and the second in October 2027.
