Hong Kong’s financial markets won’t close anymore
24/7 settlement is officially moving forward
Is the traditional banking system about to change?
Holy shit
Guys
Bank transfers and financial market settlements
used to depend on banking hours
Want to take care of some financial business over the weekend?
Sorry
The system might be taking a break too
But Hong Kong is now getting ready to make this happen
On November 2
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced
that Ensemble TX, the pilot phase of its Ensemble project, is entering a new stage
Officially supporting 24/7 settlement of tokenized deposits between banks
using tokenized central bank money
What does that mean?
Simply put
after a tokenized asset trade was completed
settlement could still be restricted by the operating hours of traditional banking systems
Now Hong Kong wants participating institutions to be able to settle transactions
even on weekends, public holidays, and in the middle of the night
And this isn’t just a story told in a PowerPoint presentation
The project has entered a live-value transaction pilot phase
The number of participating banks has grown to 12
and the number of industry pioneers has reached 20
The use cases go beyond simple transfers
They include corporate treasury management and trading in tokenized money market funds
as well as trading and settlement of more tokenized assets in the future
What’s even more noteworthy is that
the HKMA also said
it will expand the scope of the trials to include regulated stablecoins
It has also previously completed a secondary market pilot trade in tokenized foreign exchange fund notes
I think
this is what makes RWA truly worth paying attention to
Whenever people talked about RWA
it was all about putting houses, bonds, and funds on the blockchain
But tokenizing assets is only the first step
The real challenge is whether money can move in sync
whether trades can be settled promptly
and whether different institutions can work together
What Hong Kong is now building out
is precisely this piece of infrastructure
Of course
24/7 settlement doesn’t mean all retail users can immediately buy and sell every tokenized asset whenever they want, nor does it mean the entire traditional financial market has already moved onto the blockchain
But the direction is clear
Financial markets may really have no closing time in the future
This doesn’t mean BTC and ETH spot trading are being opened up for anyone to do as they please
The underlying assets are compliant tokenized deposits and regulated assets
This is tokenized infrastructure within the banking system
This news is positive for Hong Kong’s compliant sectors, tokenized ETFs, and narratives around compliant stablecoins
We’ll keep following developments
