🇰🇪 On Wednesday, November 4, Kenya’s crypto “grace period” ends. What’s changing for platforms… and for you.
📜 Reminder: Kenya’s Virtual Asset Service Providers Act (VASP Act) came into force on November 4, 2025. Businesses already operating had 1 year to comply. The deadline is the day after tomorrow.
👉 VASP = any business that exchanges, holds, or transfers crypto for clients (exchange, wallet, broker…).
🏛️ Two watchdogs:
• CMA (financial markets): exchanges, brokers, advisers
• CBK (central bank): custodial wallets, payments, stablecoin issuers
💰 For an exchange: minimum capital of KSh 100 million, with a license renewed every year. Without a license: fines of up to KSh 25 million for a company, and up to 5 years in prison for an individual.
⚠️ Key point: a foreign platform that targets Kenyans is treated as if it operates in Kenya. And a licensed exchange will only be able to list stablecoins approved by the CBK. No approvals have been published so far, according to VASP Tracker.
🛺 Kevin, a tuk-tuk driver in Mombasa, buys a little $BTC every week. His go-to steps:
1. Check whether his platform has announced a license application
2. Don’t panic: nothing suggests accounts will be frozen on the 5th
3. Keep a record of his purchases in case of new tax rules
4. Avoid “agents” who promise to “secure” his funds before the deadline: a classic scam
🌍 More protection, but perhaps fewer platforms: major exchanges, and the $BNB ecosystem, will have to adapt.
Not financial advice. DYOR.
In your opinion, does a crypto license protect users or hold back adoption in Africa? 👇
