Day 5 after the Binance hack: why didn’t I move my funds?
Emotionally, many people say trust is broken, but the data tells a different story:
1️⃣ $6.3 billion was stolen. Binance covered the shortfall with its own funds and has already replenished about 95%. User balances haven’t changed at all.
2️⃣ Withdrawals were paused for about 45 hours, then resumed in stages. All 15 networks in the first batch were reopened that day.
3️⃣ On the first day after withdrawals resumed, $4.65 billion was withdrawn and $1.01 billion was deposited—a net outflow of $3.64 billion, just 2.1% of total assets of $171 billion. Withdrawal volumes have since fallen.
A real collapse is when a company refuses to acknowledge what happened, refuses to compensate users, and won’t let them withdraw. None of those three things happened this time.
There’s just one thing I’m watching next: the new proof of reserves. Once reserve ratios for major coins are ≥100%, trust will naturally return.
