A lot of people have asked: Now that SK Hynix has released its earnings report, why am I still shorting it?

After the report came out, a closer look revealed that revenue looked impressive on paper, but profits fell short of expectations. The good news about HBM orders had already been fully priced in and fueled speculation beforehand—a classic case of “buy the rumor, sell the news.”

The rally after the report was released was just one last push to lure in buyers and mark a short-term peak, not the start of a new uptrend. The memory sector’s short-term gains had run ahead of themselves. The market had already priced in the stories of rising HBM prices and demand for AI computing power, leaving few new catalysts to drive shares higher.

Without fresh positive news, it’s hard for bulls to keep up the momentum, while plenty of investors sitting on gains are ready to cash out. On top of that, the Fed’s hawkish stance continues to weigh on growth-oriented tech stocks, and sentiment across the U.S. AI and memory sectors is weak.

In this environment, investors are more inclined to lock in profits. When a stock can’t push higher, it can easily turn down. That’s why I opened a short position after the earnings report, when the rally was running out of steam, aiming to profit from a pullback as investors sell the news—and I’m keeping a strict stop-loss in place!
