When you’re new to crypto, it’s easy to make the mistake of estimating your gains roughly. But keeping track of your numbers is the foundation of being a good trader.
Let’s look at a simple example to understand the basic mechanics.
💰 The Scenario:
You invest $500 in a token.
The price of this token rises, and your investment is multiplied by 1.7 (a gain of +70%).
🔥 Step 1: Quickly calculate your gains
To find out how much you’ve earned without getting lost in the number of tokens, use the multiplier method:
Final balance: Initial investment × Multiplier
👉 \(500 \times 1.7 = \mathbf{850 \$}\)Net profit (your gain): Final balance − Initial investment
👉 \(850 \$ - 500 \$ = \mathbf{350 \$}\)
In this fictional world, you pocketed $350 in net profit. Easy, right? 🚀
⚠️ The 3 market realities you should NEVER forget!
In real life, a simulation isn’t enough. To avoid unpleasant surprises in your portfolio, you need to add 3 essential factors:
1. Platform fees (Trading Fees): Every time you buy or sell on an exchange (such as Binance), the platform takes a small commission (often between 0.1% and 0.5%). On a round trip, this eats into your final profit a little.
2. Market liquidity: If you buy a very little-known crypto (a "micro-cap"), when it’s time to sell at a high price, there may not be enough buyers on the other side. The actual selling price may then be lower than you expected.
3. Taxes (Taxation): Depending on your country of residence, as soon as you convert your profit back into fiat currency (dollars, euros, etc.), the government may claim a percentage of your capital gains. Keep that in mind before spending it all!
A good trader is one who calculates EVERYTHING, from profit to fees.
