BTC price is up while open interest is down: this move is short covering, not new money entering

The Fear & Greed Index is still at 37 (Fear), yet BTC has climbed above 78,300, with a closing position of 89%. A closer look at derivatives casts doubt on the quality of the rally.

1. $BTC Driven by a short squeeze, with limited room to run
Open interest is $7.463 billion, down 1.47% over the period: price up, open interest down = shorts closing and exiting (a short squeeze), not new money going long. A short squeeze can push prices higher, but once shorts have closed, that support fades.
The funding rate is at its 0.0100% cap, or 11% annualized, and has been positive for 24 consecutive readings—longs have been paying all along, and long positions are crowded.
The long/short ratio across all accounts is 2.28, while for top traders it is just 1.66: retail traders are more aggressive than large traders, and the crowded side is often poorly positioned. The taker buy/sell ratio has fallen to 0.95 (balanced), as buying pressure fades. The basis is still at a 0.05% discount, suggesting spot markets haven't joined the frenzy.

2. $ETH Funding rate keeps flipping; no confirmed turning point
The funding rate is -0.0017%, with just one consecutive reading in the same direction. It was negative all day on 10-31 (shorts paying), turned positive at 16:00 on 11-01, then flipped negative again at 00:00 on 11-02—longs and shorts are battling it out. OI is nearly unchanged at $5.390 billion, while the long/short ratio across all accounts has climbed to 2.57, making retail positioning even more crowded than in BTC.

How to read this: neither is a trend reversal; both reflect a shift in positioning between longs and shorts. BTC is being propped up by a short squeeze and a capped funding rate, so the rally's quality is questionable. ETH's funding rate is still oscillating between positive and negative.

Watch two figures: whether BTC's OI stops falling and starts to rise (a rise would signal new money entering), and whether ETH's funding rate can hold steadily on the same side for consecutive readings.
