THORChain said an Ethereum block reorganization on Oct. 31 caused the protocol to mistakenly release 10 ETH that had not actually been deposited, leading to a temporary pause on ETH swaps and transactions on related chains.

An automated solvency check was triggered immediately after the incident. About two minutes later, node operators paused ETH transaction signing to prevent further funds from leaving. Users voluntarily returned the 10 ETH, restoring the custody vault’s solvency.

Trading is still active on AVAX, BASE, RUNE, and XRPL. The paused chains include ATOM, BCH, BSC, BTC, DOGE, ETH, LTC, SOL, TRON, and ZEC.

The core development team is working on bug fixes. Node operators will decide whether to reopen each affected chain after confirming it is safe. According to THORChain, the emergency pause mechanism is controlled by a vote among the nodes and does not give them control over assets.

THORChain’s pause has also slowed the laundering of funds stolen from Binance.
