Maternal mortality is a tragedy I have experienced firsthand. The passing of my closest friend, Oluchi, during childbirth is a loss I will never forget. I also endured the heartbreak of losing Madam Florence in the exact same manner. She was my manager at Sterling Bank and, without a doubt, the greatest supervisor I have ever had the privilege of working under. While I know of several other similar cases, the departure of these two remarkable women has left a permanent mark on my soul.

Through these heartbreaking experiences, I have witnessed the severe toll that giving birth can take. I have observed the deep sorrow it causes, the families it shatters, and the wonderful individuals who are unable to return to the people who cherish them.

Because of this reality, I find myself entirely lost for words whenever a man casually remarks that pregnancy is not really a big deal. Carrying a child is far from a simple endeavor, and delivering a baby is not merely a minor discomfort. In order to bring a new life into the world, a woman must endure immense physical stress and emotional challenges. Tragically, a number of these mothers never survive the process.

I sincerely urge everyone to acknowledge this profound sacrifice. It is vital to honor the journey of motherhood and to avoid minimizing the immense lengths to which women go to create life. May God bring judgment upon any generation of men who intentionally belittle such a monumental sacrifice. Amen.
