Why do some people have a high trading win rate but still end up losing money?
After entering the crypto market, many people care most about things like:
Which coin will go up today?
Where can I go long?
Where can I catch the next market move?
But I believe what truly determines whether a trader can stay in the market long term is often not their win rate, but their risk management.
Here’s a simple example:
Suppose two traders each have 10,000 USDT.
Trader A:
70% win rate
Earns 100 USDT per trade
Loses 500 USDT per losing trade
Trader B:
45% win rate
Earns 300 USDT per trade
Loses 100 USDT per losing trade
At first glance, A has a higher win rate. But over the long term, B may actually achieve better trading results.
I believe the three most important things in trading are:
1️⃣ Set your stop-loss before entering a trade
Don’t wait until after entering a trade to start thinking about where to place your stop-loss.
2️⃣ Don’t risk all your capital at once
You can follow the principle of risking no more than 1% of your total capital on a single trade. Note that this refers to the maximum amount you could lose, not using only 1% of your capital for the position.
3️⃣ Don’t increase your position size to make back your losses
The market won’t give you a better chance to profit on your next trade just because you lost money on the last one.
One last question for everyone:
If you had to choose between these two trading strategies:
A. A 70% win rate, but small wins and large losses.
B. A 45% win rate, but average wins are 3 times the average loss.
Which would you choose?
Personally, I care more about long-term expected value than simply pursuing a high win rate.
