The Zcash community grant pool has grown too large: founder Zooko and cryptographer Sean Bowe have teamed up to propose ending ZCG’s 8% share of block rewards in an upgrade after NU7, and sending around 50,000 ZEC to an unspendable address within 30 days of the proposal passing, to fund a sustainable mechanism that releases the funds gradually to miners. Unchained valued the 50,000 ZEC at about $61 million, based on CoinGecko’s price of around $1,224 on Friday; the committee has about 91,000 ZEC on its books. CoinGecko’s ZEC spot price is around $1,245 (snapshot at about 18:10 Beijing time).

This is a dispute over how governance power should be divided—not a sudden new source of buying demand for privacy coins. The opposing view is that waiting three months before deciding would also be reasonable, and rushing to turn off the tap looks more like emotion overriding process.

Until a formal ZIP is added to the network upgrade schedule, or ZCG publicly withdraws its own gradual-funding proposal and endorses the joint draft, treat this as forum-stage progress. If two weeks from now several competing drafts are still on the table and no one has withdrawn theirs, consider consensus unformed.
