On this day 18 years ago, during the 2008 financial crisis, an unknown person named Satoshi Nakamoto published a 9-page paper introducing a new kind of currency called Bitcoin.

Since then:

- 2009: The Bitcoin network went live, and Satoshi Nakamoto sent the first Bitcoin transaction to Hal Finney.
- 2010: Someone bought two pizzas for 10,000 BTC
- 2011: Bitcoin reached $1
- 2012: First halving
- 2013: Bitcoin surpassed $1,000
- 2016: Second halving
- 2017: Bitcoin surpassed $10,000, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange launched Bitcoin futures
- 2020: Third halving, and Strategy began buying Bitcoin
- 2021: Tesla bought $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin, El Salvador made it legal tender, and Bitcoin's market cap reached $1 trillion
- 2024: Spot Bitcoin ETFs launched, the fourth halving took place, and Bitcoin surpassed $100,000
- 2025: The United States established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, and Bitcoin reached a record high of $126,198
- The 20 millionth Bitcoin was mined.

All of this happened without its creator, who disappeared in 2011 and has never been found since.

Happy 18th birthday, Bitcoin. $btc
