Coinbase Q3 results: Returning to profit ≠ a recovery in its core trading business

Coinbase reported Q3 net income of about $719 million (about $2.51 per share), ending three consecutive quarters of losses. Trading revenue fell about 43% year over year to roughly $590 million. Don’t read “back in the black” as “spot trading has recovered” or “the fee engine has restarted.”

Breaking down the profit mix:
① Alongside net income of about $719 million was roughly $715 million in fair-value gains on crypto investments—returning to profit ≠ growth in the core business.
② Trading revenue was about $590 million, down roughly 43% year over year—the largest revenue item is still shrinking.
③ Prediction markets and derivatives accounted for about 25% of trading revenue, while subscription services made up about 49% of net revenue—diversification is growing, but don’t let excitement over new products obscure spot market weakness.

Net income tells you whether the books are in the black; spot volume and market share tell you whether the trading channel is heating up.
