Bitcoin’s second halving took place on July 9, 2016, at block height 420,000, reducing the block reward from 25 coins to 12.5.
Bitcoin’s block rewards are calculated in satoshis in the code. After successive halvings, they will eventually drop to 0, at which point no new coins will be produced.
Learning this won’t make me money right away, but it can help me avoid one rookie mistake.
The halving of $BTC is triggered by block height, not by a calendar date. Current: 77730.
