If you’re traveling to Japan, take note: starting today, November 1, Japan’s tax-free shopping system is switching to a pay-tax-first, get-refunded-later model.

Along with this change, Japan Tax-Free and UPBOND are offering a new option starting today: tourists can receive their tax refunds in the yen stablecoin JPYC, sent directly to their own wallets. If they don’t have a wallet, they can create one during the process. Transfers are planned to use C-Chain ($AVAX ). Avalanche’s official account also posted about this a few days ago—the bottom-right corner of the second image says it launches on 2026.11.01.

What I find interesting is that this isn’t crypto funds being moved around within the industry. It’s real money that was already going to be refunded to tourists, just taking a route with lower fees. The amount per transaction may not be large, but there are plenty of visitors to Japan. If this works smoothly at scale, it’ll be more convincing than a lot of on-chain activity metrics.

I’m more curious about the actual experience: how smoothly identity verification goes, and how you convert the stablecoins in your wallet into your own money after returning home.

A question for those who’ve been to Japan: if you could choose to have your tax refund sent directly to your wallet in stablecoins, would you pick that, or would you prefer cash or a refund to your credit card?
