FBI confirms it: North Korea’s TraderTraitor was behind the $6.3 billion Binance theft.
On October 31, the FBI issued an alert jointly with the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation. This was the first time the FBI officially attributed the attack; until now, it had only been the assessment of analytics firms like TRM and Chainalysis.
The FBI said the stolen funds are being converted into ETH on a large scale, and will then be moved around further through DeFi and instant-exchange platforms.
The FBI also published a long list of addresses holding stolen ETH, BTC, and SOL, calling on node operators, exchanges, and DeFi platforms to help block the funds.
In my view, analytics firms can say what they like, but it’s not confirmed until the FBI makes it official. From here, the focus of recovering the funds shifts from “who did it?” to “where is the money going, and can it be stopped?”
I’m watching two things: whether major platforms actually block the addresses holding the stolen funds, and whether Binance withdrawals resume on time this afternoon. If withdrawals are delayed again, it means the cleanup is not yet complete.
Do you think the FBI naming names this time can actually stop these funds from being moved around, or is it just symbolic?
