Walmart-backed OnePay opens a USDC-to-checking account channel: access is live ≠ stablecoins have gone mainstream

Select U.S. users can send USDC to an in-app address. After compliance checks and conversion through Stripe-owned Bridge, the funds are credited in U.S. dollars to OnePay Checking. There are no conversion fees to start, and about 12 chains are supported. It sounds like “stablecoins at the supermarket checkout,” but a few steps remain.

Three things to keep in mind:
1. Scope: It’s initially available to select customers, not rolled out nationwide; being able to open an account ≠ everyone can deposit.
2. Form: Funds arrive converted to fiat and credited to the checking balance. Users don’t hold on-chain USDC they can spend directly—this is an on-ramp, not a stablecoin wallet.
3. Costs and limits: The company says there are no conversion fees to start, but on-chain gas, compliance checks, limits, and state availability still apply. Don’t read “no conversion fees” as frictionless and unlimited.

The channel answers whether “stablecoins can be converted into dollars for everyday use.” Coverage and how funds are held are what show whether “retail payments have truly shifted gears.”
