How did $1.07 billion in crypto funds turn into cash through Cambodian casinos?
The latest report from TRM Labs reveals a mature, standardized on-chain cash-out channel: from January to September this year, 34 brick-and-mortar casinos in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, received approximately $1.07 billion in crypto assets.
The data is straightforward. Of that $1.07 billion, 99.9% was transferred as USDT on the TRON blockchain. After receiving USDT, these casinos converted it directly into cash, with virtually no customer due diligence. Local pawnshops, supermarkets, and exchange counters nearby offer similar services, forming a complete offline network for converting crypto into fiat currency.
What’s even more noteworthy is where the funds came from: more than 64% of the incoming funds went to casinos linked to OFAC-sanctioned networks. This indicates that, to a significant extent, this channel is serving the fund transfer needs of sanctioned entities. In this particular context, USDT on TRON effectively serves as a medium for cross-border value transfers.
When tracking this kind of activity, would you prioritize examining the labels associated with large on-chain addresses, or monitoring changes in the size of these offline entities’ fund pools?
