People always ask what the real difference is between spot and futures. The way I see it, in one sentence: with spot, you actually buy and own the coins; with futures, you're betting on whether the price will go up or down.
If spot drops by half, the coins are still in your account—as long as you can ride it out, you're fine. With 10x leverage on a futures position, if the market moves against you by around 10%, your margin is gone, and you don't even get the chance to ride it out. Perpetual futures also have funding rates, so holding a position overnight comes at a cost—and if you're on the wrong side, you have to pay up.
I've seen way too many people learn this lesson the hard way on their very first futures trade. If you've just started out and want to try $BTC $ETH , practice with spot for a few months first. There's really no rush.
