Binance loses about 18,270 BTC: more than Tesla’s holdings and about 2.3 times El Salvador’s reserves

CoinDesk, 10/31: Hackers transferred about 18,270 BTC out of Binance’s hot wallet (worth about $1.4 billion at approximately $78,500 per BTC). That exceeds the 11,509 BTC disclosed by Tesla and is about 2.3 times El Salvador’s official reserves of roughly 7,820 BTC. It is only about 442 BTC short of the 18,712 BTC disclosed by SpaceX. TRM Labs attributed the attack with high confidence to North Korea’s TraderTraitor. Binance said it has about $6.34 billion in its own funds to cover the loss and has frozen about $3 billion. It is targeting November 1 to resume withdrawals and November 2 for its proof of reserves (PoR).

【View】The single-point risk of CEX hot wallets is once again in the spotlight: BTC itself cannot be frozen by an issuer, unlike stablecoins, which can be blacklisted. As the market distinguishes “blockchain security from exchange operational security,” BTC’s decline has been milder than the historical average for CEX hacks, suggesting that “not a protocol failure” was already partly priced in.

【Opportunities/Risks】In the short term, watch the $75k–$77k support level (Compass Point) and whether withdrawals resume on November 1 and the PoR is published on November 2 as planned. In the medium term, institutions may become more selective about custodians and OTC counterparties. The hackers’ roughly $1.4 billion in BTC remains untouched across 19 addresses; if it is sent to exchanges or liquidated OTC, there is still a window for a second market shock.

Which matters more to you this time: the “CEX security premium” or “BTC’s relative resilience”?
