OpenAI cuts fundraising target by $10 billion; Microsoft’s Azure grows 48% and still gets dragged down—I’m not catching a falling knife
What I saw:
FT Friday: OpenAI lowered its fundraising target for this round by about $10 billion. It’s now seeking about $20 billion, with its target valuation cut from roughly $1.4 trillion to around $1.25 trillion. The Nasdaq fell about 2.9% on Friday.
Microsoft’s Azure revenue grew 48% this week, beating expectations, but shares still closed Friday at ≈521.9 (vs. ≈530 at the previous close), about 1.7% below the 20-day moving average of ≈531. The intraday low was ≈514.4. META is still about 11% below its 20-day moving average.
My take:
Cloud growth beating expectations can’t stop AI fundraising jitters from spilling over. Even the biggest publicly traded company with ties to OpenAI fell along with the market. Investors are cutting valuation premiums, not snapping up earnings figures.
I’m watching, not catching a falling knife: let’s talk again if it holds above Thursday’s close of ≈530; if it falls below Friday’s low of ≈514.4, I’ll consider that a second leg of the spillover.
Do you think this is AI-bubble valuation compression, or can Microsoft’s cloud business thrive on its own?
