OpenAI nearly scrapped Token-based pricing, but faced strong opposition from customers.
They had considered completely changing how AI is priced: users would simply submit a task, OpenAI would quote a price, and they would be charged that amount once the task was completed.
But customers weren’t buying it.
Sam Altman even asked some customers: If the same task cost more when priced by Token, would you still be willing to accept that?
Surprisingly, customers would rather pay more and keep Token as the billing unit.
They need to know exactly what they’re paying for, and worry that relying entirely on OpenAI’s quotes could leave them worse off in the long run.
Altman was also frustrated by this:
“From a business value perspective, the Token is a false unit of measurement.”
After all, using more Tokens doesn’t mean the AI has created more value.
