The W addresses Stellar plans to introduce won’t require creating a new contract for every customer. Instead, a customer identifier will be attached to the contract address.

CAP-84, part of the Bell upgrade, allows the same contract to receive transfers from different customers: funds go into the same contract, while transfer events retain the corresponding customer ID, allowing the application to identify which customer the funds belong to. For services such as custodial wallets and exchanges, the changes affect how deposits are received and reconciled.

One thing that’s easy to overlook is the integration work. Updating the SDK only provides the ability to parse W addresses; wallets and platforms must also adapt their own address validation, display, and storage logic to accept this new format. When you encounter a new address format, first confirm that both the sender and recipient support it before proceeding.

The official schedule calls for a testnet vote on November 3 and a mainnet vote on November 23. The upgrade still requires validator approval, so the plan should not be treated as a completed launch.

Transfers still carry risks, including entering the wrong address, platform incompatibility, and contract vulnerabilities. A technical upgrade also does not guarantee token performance.
