Came across The Edge: Malaysia’s Securities Commission (SC) announced today that applications for new licences for equity crowdfunding (ECF), peer-to-peer (P2P) financing, and digital asset exchanges (RMO-DAX) will reopen in November.
Key details: Interested parties can engage with the SC from November 1, and the updated guidelines and forms will be released on November 15. There are currently only 4 RMO-DAX operators; according to the regulator, cumulative investment in digital assets is around RM21 billion. Cumulative P2P financing is around RM3 billion, with a default rate of about 2.6%. A dedicated Islamic finance-focused ECF/P2P channel will also be opened, along with debt-based P2P financing for mid-sized enterprises.
Southeast Asia is opening the door a little wider to compliant digital asset channels. Licencing is moving from restrictive toward more open—we’ll soon see who’s genuinely willing to enter.
