Amazon AWS grew 39% but fell under cash flow pressure: Will AI capex anxiety continue to weigh on BTC?

At around 05:20 Beijing time on October 31, `#AmazonSharesFallAbout7%InPremarketTrading` appeared on the Binance Square trending list, with the page showing about 115 people discussing it. The real tension worth watching is not that “Amazon had poor results,” but that AWS is still growing rapidly while the market has started repricing the AI narrative based on cash flow and capital spending. This shift in valuation could affect tech stocks first, then reach BTC through risk appetite—but there is no automatic causal link between the two.

I. What happened?

Amazon announced its third-quarter 2026 results on October 29: net sales of $201.9 billion, up 12% year over year; AWS sales of $46 billion, up 39.3%, one of its fastest growth rates in nearly five years; and operating income of $28.1 billion. Viewed on its own, the income statement does not show weak business growth.

The issue is cash flow. The company reported operating cash flow of $168.3 billion over the past 12 months, up 29% year over year, but free cash flow was negative $42.4 billion. Net purchases of property and equipment increased by $94.8 billion year over year, mainly reflecting investment in AI-related infrastructure. The market therefore shifted its focus from “Is there demand?” to “When will investment translate into returns?” Amazon shares fell about 7% at one point in trading after the results were released.

That is also what makes this trending item valuable: it does not prove that AI demand has disappeared, but reminds the market that growth in AI infrastructure can coincide with short-term cash-flow pressure. If investors become less tolerant of high-capex companies’ valuations, volatility in tech stocks could become an external headwind to risk appetite in crypto markets. But this remains a transmission hypothesis, not evidence that Amazon’s decline directly caused BTC to fall.

II. What is BTC reflecting now?

For spot trading, see Binance BTC / USDT spot: https://www.binance.com/zh-CN/trade/BTC_USDT . At around 05:22 Beijing time, BTC was approximately 76874.01 USDT, down 3.183% over 24 hours, with a range of approximately 79687.92–76325.98 and quote trading volume of approximately 2.2325 billion USDT. The spot price was near its intraday low, which only indicates that the market was weak at that time; this price movement cannot be attributed solely to Amazon’s earnings report.

For the leveraged market, see Binance BTCUSDT USDⓈ-M Perpetual: https://www.binance.com/zh-CN/futures/BTCUSDT . At the same time, the latest price was approximately 76823.70 USDT, down 3.154% over 24 hours, with quote trading volume of approximately 21.6948 billion USDT; open interest was approximately 95743.820 BTC, the mark price was approximately 76827.31, and the most recent funding rate was approximately +0.010000%/8 hours. Perpetual trading volume was markedly higher than spot volume, indicating greater activity in the leveraged market, but high trading volume cannot be interpreted as “AI funds are shorting BTC.”

The latest closed 4-hour BTC spot candlestick (00:00–04:00 Beijing time) opened at 77622.01, reached a high of 77692.31 and a low of 76325.98, and closed at 76942.57, with quote trading volume of approximately 191.7 million USDT. The current 04:00–08:00 candlestick has not yet closed. The cover image is a locally sourced BTCUSDT 4-hour chart. The price axis and the high of 87,385.1 and low of 74,909.4 shown on the chart are for observing price movements only; they do not replace exchange data, nor can they be used to claim that the chart is embedded in the article body.

III. Does ETH reflect the same risk appetite?

For comparison, see Binance ETH / USDT spot: https://www.binance.com/zh-CN/trade/ETH_USDT . At the same time, ETH was approximately 2244.40 USDT, down 1.800% over 24 hours, with quote trading volume of approximately 1.2428 billion USDT. Binance ETHUSDT USDⓈ-M Perpetual: https://www.binance.com/zh-CN/futures/ETHUSDT . The latest price was approximately 2242.40, down 1.578% over 24 hours; open interest was approximately 2346466.454 ETH, and the most recent funding rate was approximately -0.020577%/8 hours.

BTC and ETH both showing weakness only indicates an increased possibility that risk assets are under broad pressure. A negative ETH perpetual funding rate likewise reflects only the positioning cost structure on the short side at that time; it does not prove that the Amazon news has created a new source of fundamental selling in crypto markets. The case for risk transmission would be better supported if U.S. tech stocks continue to weaken, BTC spot trading volume keeps rising, and 4-hour closes repeatedly fail to hold key lows.

My view is that the short-term significance of Amazon’s earnings for BTC is more about “increased sensitivity to valuations and cash flow” than a new catalyst for crypto assets. AWS’s 39.3% year-over-year growth shows that AI demand still has real business support; free cash flow of negative $42.4 billion, however, suggests that the market may demand a clearer path to returns. To attribute BTC’s current weakness to this news, we would need to see at least a concurrent decline in U.S. risk assets, continued pressure on BTC spot—not just perpetuals—and no rapid recovery in the closing price structure.

What could overturn this view? If Amazon later demonstrates through orders, cloud-business profits, and improved cash flow that its AI investments are beginning to pay off, and tech stocks regain valuation support despite high investment, while BTC also recovers and holds above the recently lost range, then the view that “anxiety over AI capex will continue to weigh on risk appetite” would need to be revised downward. Conversely, if tech stocks remain under pressure from capital spending and free cash flow concerns, BTC spot breaks lower on rising volume, and leveraged positions in perpetuals are not significantly flushed out, the risk of transmission should still be watched—but a single earnings report still cannot be treated as the sole cause.
