Meme market: who moves first, leaders or small caps?

I only pay attention to memes when they have independent buying pressure; otherwise, I treat them as volatility.

For memes, first check whether the leaders have volume, then see whether the small caps dare to follow.

PEPE 0.000005 (+0.60%), WIF 0.1743 (-0.17%), SHIB 0.00000474 (-1.66%), BONK 0.00000295 (-1.99%)

For comparison: BTC 77038 (24h -3.57%).

PEPE is clearly outperforming BTC at +0.60% over 24h versus BTC at -3.57%, which points to independent buying pressure. But DOGE is only down 2.57%, so there’s no sector-wide confirmation. I’m sticking with the leaders, not betting on a catch-up rally.

BTC is still at 77038 (-3.57%). Unless BTC gets above 77,654, I’ll treat a move to the upside in memes as noise.

BTC is the switch for memes: unless it gets above 80037, I won’t count gains in small caps as a sector-wide move.

Data: Binance spot 24h / Binance USDⓈ-M / Yahoo daily (5-day change) / altme_fng / mempool_fees / defillama_chains / coingecko_trending. Missing figures are not filled in.
When memes aren’t outperforming BTC, are you still holding them?

Useful takeaway: when gas fees on Ethereum rise, on-chain activity cools first, and derivatives markets often react later.
Food for thought: the dollar has strengthened over 5 days while BTC is still rising—treat it as an independent move, with a lower expectation of staying power.
