Zcash’s governance crisis is now out in the open. Zooko supports a ZIP jointly submitted by the Tachyon Group, led by Sean Bowe, and Shielded Labs: stop providing further funding to ZCG and reduce its treasury while preserving its ability to operate; allocate $50 million to the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), and establish a separate “Future Development and Legal Defense Fund.”

The core issue is not whether to provide grants, but that as ZEC’s price rose, the funds and influence controlled by ZCG grew in tandem, turning the grants mechanism into a center of power. Zooko called on proponents of other proposals to withdraw them and the community to consolidate its support, while emphasizing that Shielded Labs does not accept ZCG funding and relies solely on donations from holders and supporters.

The controversy has not gone away. Some community members had previously called for the development fund to be shut down completely ahead of schedule, arguing that eliminating only ZCG would instead concentrate power even more in the hands of token holders. How the boundaries of the treasury are drawn could determine the long-term governance model of this privacy-focused public blockchain. $ZEC
