The cruelest reality of running a frontier AI company is that, to this day, there’s no competitive advantage in sight that you can hold on to.

This highlight clip from AI on Air is taken from a recent Redpoint AI episode, featuring Benedict Evans, former a16z partner and renowned tech industry analyst. He breaks down the paths available to model companies facing a “no moat” predicament.

▷ Unlike previous platform shifts, AI’s marginal costs are rising rather than falling. You can’t build a consumer app, attract a hundred million users, and figure out how to make money later. The only real battleground is enterprise customers.
▷ Running a model company means coordinating researchers, funding, and computing power while “herding cats” in every direction. A new model takes the top spot on the leaderboard every four to six weeks, and there’s no clear path to lasting differentiation, whether through network effects or by building a product layer on top of the model.
▷ One viable approach is to excel at a single capability. For example, Claude may have gained an edge by getting really good at coding. But every three to six months, the landscape gets reshuffled all over again. No one can afford to let up. 🪁
