🔍 Binance hack: Why isn’t the story of a “hacked employee device” enough?
In its initial update, Binance indicated that a mobile device belonging to an employee on the DevOps team may have been the starting point. But the latest clarification is important: the device alone was not enough to carry out the withdrawals; the attack involved multiple stages and entry points.
Technically, this means that compromising a device inside the company does not automatically mean gaining control of wallet keys. The attacker needed access to internal services and had to exploit an operational process that allowed unauthorized transactions to be sent. Binance says it found no evidence that private keys had been leaked.
So far, the company has confirmed that it froze about $3 billion in affected assets and says it will cover the losses from its SAFU fund and its own funds. Deposits are ongoing, while withdrawals have been temporarily suspended as it secures the withdrawal service and the associated addresses.
The investigation is still ongoing, so the final details of the technical attack path remain subject to the full report. The lesson here is that platform security depends not only on protecting keys, but also on securing employee devices, internal services, transaction permissions, and emergency procedures.
