The Bank of England has opened a consultation on draft supervisory criteria for central counterparties (CCPs) that want to accept tokenised versions of collateral they already accept.

Its position is that the current framework is not an obstacle, provided that this collateral can be valued, transferred and settled when needed, including during periods of stress. It applies the principle of “same risk, same regulatory outcome”.

What it hopes to achieve:

• Move and manage collateral more quickly, including across jurisdictions

• Better respond to margin calls

• Drive innovation in central clearing

Deputy Governor for Financial Stability Sarah Breeden frames this within a broader agenda to adopt tokenization responsibly. The consultation closes on February 12, 2027, and is part of joint work with the FCA and HM Treasury. The announcement does not mention stablecoins.
