The cryptocurrency market was stunned by one of the largest cyberattacks in its history. Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, confirmed a serious security incident that occurred on Thursday (October 29).

💰 The scale of the impact

The company estimates that approximately US$6.3 billion (around R$33 billion) in assets were affected by unauthorized transactions. Of that amount, approximately US$3 billion has already been frozen with the help of industry partners.

🔎 How did the attack happen?

The preliminary investigation indicates that the attackers may have used a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer to access internal systems and carry out unauthorized cryptocurrency transfers.

Binance said that, so far, it has found no evidence that the wallets’ private keys were leaked.

🛡️ What measures were taken?

The exchange temporarily suspended cryptocurrency withdrawals to strengthen security and prevent further suspicious transactions. Deposits are still working normally.

The company also stated that it would fully cover the losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate funds.

🌎 Possible consequences for the market

The incident has reignited debate about digital security, asset custody, and investor protection on centralized exchanges. Analysts have also pointed to possible links between the attack and hacker groups associated with North Korea, although Binance has not officially confirmed who was behind it.

⚠️ Attention, investors: the investigation is ongoing. It is important to follow Binance’s official announcements and avoid sharing unverified information.

The incident raises an important question for the market: how prepared are major platforms to deal with cyberattacks of this magnitude?
