The Newton Foundation said the attackers in the Binance hack sent about 8 million NEWT tokens, along with 17 other tokens, directly to the NEWT token contract address. At current prices, the tokens are worth about $3.5 million in total. The attackers themselves sent them to the wrong address.
The Foundation stressed in its statement that the NEWT contract itself was not compromised. The contract uses an immutable design, and all administrator privileges were renounced in 2025, permanently disabling upgrades. As a result, no one—not even the Foundation—can retrieve the tokens. They are locked in the contract, and the attackers cannot move them either. The Foundation has shared its findings with Binance.
